A primary purpose of this website is to make available to a wider readership, for the benefit of scholarship and intellectual inquiry, the annotations of Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, first proposed as the heart and mind behind “Shakespeare” in 1920.

At present around a dozen books from de Vere’s library, identified through the material evidence of the books themselves, records of de Vere’s book purchases, and the forensic data of handwriting, are known to survive and are documented here as of February, 2026.

The complete line up of currently available de Vere annotated books is available on our raw data page.

The most recent addition to our raw data is the table recording the somewhat over six-hundred annotations in the 1574 Audley End Tacitus. The number system of both the Cassius Dio and Tacitus data bases is for reference purposes to support further writing and publication about these annotations. The current versions of the data bases are 4.22 for Dio and 1.0 for Tacitus. Future updates to these tables, if any, will be published under updated numbers.
